How to practice French reading

Original French classics often use the passé simple, literary vocabulary, and longer sentences. B1 readers can begin with plot-driven adventure; B2 readers can handle satire and descriptive novels. Use translation to recover the meaning of a sentence, then notice the same word when it returns later in the chapter.

Can I learn French by reading books?Yes. Reading builds recognition of vocabulary and grammar in connected text. Choose a book near your level and translate only the words that prevent you from following the sentence.
What French reading level should I choose?Use B1 and B2 as a guide, then test the first page. A useful book should be challenging while still letting you follow the plot without translating every line.
